Handwoven Accent Napkins

Regular price $130.00

In collaboration with Wayuu weavers from the Guajira region of Colombia, we have designed handwoven napkins to complement our placemats and table runner. Using traditional Wayuu weaving techniques we've redesigned for the modern home.  Wayuu women are known for weaving intricate and colorful handbags, and we worked with master weavers to create a design, color, and pattern that is totally unique. Each napkin has a handwoven accent piece matching the set.  The accent weaving along the edge was hand sewn on to each napkin.

Sold in sets of four.  The napkins are 100% linen cotton, except for the handwoven accent.  They can be washed in cold water and ironed.  The iron should not be used on the accent piece.

Each napkin is made by hand and therefore is unique.  Measures about 17 inches wide by 17 inches long.

A beautiful statement piece.  An artisan weaver in rural Swaziland has made a special collection of biography baskets crafted to tell the stories of three women over three generations of her family. Siphiwe left school after falling pregnant and began weaving to support her child. Together Siphiwe and her husband had 6 more children, building a life at his homestead. Then one day he sold all their cattle and left. He did not return for 4 years and she had to leave her husband's family homestead. But with her income she was able to start her life again. This  basket is an interpretation of the strength of Siphiwe and so many women like her, who are the backbone of their families. Woven using indigenous Lutindzi mountain grass and up-cycled fabric cut offs from local T-shirt factories, these materials are woven around bundles of firm Lukhasi grass that makes up the core of the basket. The wrapped and woven coils of grass and navy blue fabric are shaped and stitched together. Along its spine, the basket is complemented by cow bones sourced from local abattoirs, bleached and treated by another local artisan who uses cow bone in our high-end home decor.

Dimensions: height 10.5 inches, width 13.75 inches, and length 24.5 inches.

River Metal Bowl

Regular price $285.00

We work with a talented artisan from Swaziland to create embossed and hammered metal bowls. Using a precise eye and steady hand, he works each bowl to be etched, hammered, and smoothed to create our textural design. The metal bowl is then finished with intricate weaving by the artisans from the Lavumisa Region of Swaziland. Made from indigenous Lutindzi mountain grass and sisal fiber, these materials are woven around bundles of firm Lukhasi grass. The wrapped coils are shaped and stitched together to form the bowl design around the edges. This weaving technique is unique to three artisan groups in the south-eastern part of Swaziland.  The metal work takes over one day of combined curing time and the rim of the bowl takes approximately two full days for an artisan to weave.

Dimensions:  height is 3 inches by 13.75 inches around.

Starlight Pottery and Handwoven Bowl

Regular price $385.00
Our Starlight Bowl starts with raw clay dug from the fertile soils of Swaziland. After preparing the clay, the artisans coil the wet clay to form the rough shape of the bowl, then the coiled bowl is pinched and smoothed until the shape is round and even. The bowl is left to dry, then burnished and polished to give it a smooth, satin feel. The prepared bowls are fired over open flames to give the red earth a smoky finish. The clay bowl is then completed with intricate weaving by the artisans from the Lavumisa region of Swaziland. Made from indigenous Lutindzi mountain grass and sisal fiber, these materials are woven around bundles of firm Lukhasi grass. The wrapped coils are molded and stitched together to form the bowl shape. This weaving technique is unique to the artisans in the southeastern part of the country.  Each basket takes approximately two full days to just to weave around the edges of the pottery bowl.
Dimensions: height 5.5 inches and 17.5 inches around.
